Yawkey Urban Sports Complex: Home of The BASE
In August 2024, The BASE finalized the purchase of our facility at 150 Shirley St., along with the adjacent lot at 136 Shirley St., in Roxbury. This location has been the home of The BASE since 2019, under a lease agreement. Now, we are property owners with a vested stake in the future of Roxbury and the Newmarket neighborhood. This investment marks the beginning of a new era for The BASE and demonstrates our commitment to our community.
The purchase was made possible through the support of local philanthropic leaders and foundations. Foremost among them is the Yawkey Foundation. A long-time supporter of The BASE, the foundation awarded a $1.5 million Transformational Grant for the purchase, design and renovations of the building. The grant further cements a longstanding relationship and includes the renaming of the facility to the Yawkey Urban Sports Complex: Home of The BASE.
We are proud to partner with the Yawkey Foundation and will be using a portion of the funds provided to make physical and aesthetic improvements to the interior and exterior of our facility in 2025.
The Boston Globe published an article about the purchase and renaming on September 12, 2024.
